GoodFriday: On the paints, math & fooling yourself

Happy GoodFriday!

Here's something I heard, thought, and did this week.

Something I Heard: Fooling Yourself

“You are the easiest person to fool.”

Richard Feynman, from “Cargo Cult Science,” his 1974 commencement address at Caltech.

Something I Thought: The Paints

Marcus Aurelius wrote that the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.

I believe that. But it leaves out the part I’ve been chewing on. Your thoughts don’t come from nowhere. Somebody hands them to you.

Every idea in your head arrived from somewhere. A book, a podcast, a conversation, an algorithm that decided what you’d see today. You didn’t generate most of what you think. You received it, and then it became the color of how you see everything.

So your world may be colored by your thoughts. Just be mindful of who’s handing you the paints.

Something I'm Doing: Math

This is going to sound insane, but I’ve missed doing math problems.

Most of what I learned in high school has no bearing on my working life. I know that. But I’ve always felt the real benefit of math was never the practical one.

So I told ChatGPT where I left off in high school, had it evaluate where I’m at now, and build me a curriculum to get those skills back and learn some new ones.

It probably won’t change my day to day. But it’s one of the few things in my head I picked on purpose.

Until next week!
